Writing

Writing – Intent

At Galley Hill Primary School, the intent of our English curriculum is to provide a highly engaging, language‑rich education that enables all pupils to read, write and speak fluently. We aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills and confidence to communicate their ideas, thoughts and emotions clearly and effectively.

Writing is at the heart of our English curriculum and is designed to be inspiring, creative and purposeful. Our curriculum is fully aligned to the National Curriculum and is carefully sequenced to ensure the progressive development of skills across all year groups. We intend for pupils to become confident writers who can write effectively for a wide range of purposes and audiences.

Our aims are to:

  • Promote a strong culture of reading and writing through a language‑rich learning environment;
  • Teach pupils the craft of writing and develop an ambitious and varied vocabulary;
  • Secure pupils’ understanding of the fundamental skills of grammar, spelling, handwriting and punctuation in order to support and enhance creativity;
  • Enable pupils to express their views and opinions confidently and coherently, both orally and in writing.

Writing – Implementation

The English curriculum is delivered through high‑quality teaching, underpinned by strong subject knowledge. Teachers use a range of well‑chosen strategies, including cross‑curricular links and engaging hooks, to motivate pupils and deepen learning. Lessons are carefully planned to build on prior knowledge and ensure that key skills are revisited and embedded over time. Teaching focuses on clear modelling, vocabulary development and opportunities for pupils to apply their skills in meaningful contexts.

Writing – Impact

As a result of the effective implementation of the English curriculum, pupils make strong progress in their reading, writing and spoken language. They develop the confidence, competence and independence required to communicate effectively and to succeed across the wider curriculum. Pupils demonstrate a positive attitude towards writing and leave Galley Hill Primary School well prepared for the next stage of their education.
